Main Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet active dry yeast about 2 ¼ teaspoons
- 1 ½ cups warm water 110°F
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 2 teaspoon salt
- ¼ cup baking soda
- 1 large egg beaten, for egg wash
- to taste coarse sea salt for topping
In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water. Add the sugar and salt, and stir until combined.
Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes.
Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rope and shape into a pretzel.
In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water and the baking soda to a boil. Drop each pretzel into the boiling water for 30 seconds. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a baking sheet.
Brush each pretzel with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
Bake at 450°F for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
