Ingredients 

Main Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast about 2 ¼ teaspoons
  • 1 ½ cups warm water 110°F
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg beaten, for egg wash
  • to taste coarse sea salt for topping

Instructions 

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water. Add the sugar and salt, and stir until combined.
  2. Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  3. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes.
  4. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rope and shape into a pretzel.
  5. In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water and the baking soda to a boil. Drop each pretzel into the boiling water for 30 seconds. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a baking sheet.
  6. Brush each pretzel with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
  7. Bake at 450°F for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
