Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 6 cups thinly sliced onions
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 8 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 6 slices French bread, toasted
  • 2 cups grated Gruyere cheese

Instructions

  1. 1. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until they are caramelized, about 20 minutes.
  2. 2. Add the garlic and flour to the skillet, and cook for another minute.
  3. 3. Transfer the onion mixture to the slow cooker. Add the beef broth, white wine, thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
  4. 4. Cover and cook on low for 7-8 hours.
  5. 5. When ready to serve, preheat the broiler. Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls, top each with a slice of toasted French bread, and sprinkle with Gruyere cheese.
  6. 6. Place the bowls under the broiler until the cheese is melted and bubbly, about 2-3 minutes.
