Main Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons shortening
- ¾ cup warm water
- as needed oil for frying
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Gradually add the warm water, mixing until the dough comes together.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth.
Roll the dough out to about ¼ inch thickness and cut into 3-inch squares.
Heat oil in a frying pan to 375°F (190°C).
Fry the squares in hot oil until golden brown and puffed, turning once.
Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
