Ingredients 

Main Ingredients

  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • ¼ cup warm water

Instructions 

  1. 1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. 2. Dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes.
  3. 3. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
  4. 4. Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. 5. Stir in the yeast mixture and buttermilk until just combined.
  6. 6. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead lightly.
  7. 7. Roll the dough to about ½ inch thickness and cut with a biscuit cutter.
  8. 8. Place the biscuits on a baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
